| You'll be hard pressed to find a better haul in #MockTwo. The Rams traded down again after the RG3 blockbuster, picking up additional third- and sixth-rounders in exchange for dropping two spots in the first. St. Louis then addressed an O-Line need with rock-solid Reiff, and aggressively chose back-to-back wideouts at the top of round two. Hill will be St. Louis' Z receiver. Randle will be the X. They'll be rookie starters in an upgraded, overhauled corps. The Rams didn't stop there.
Long a sieve in run defense, St. Louis drafted immovable nose tackle Chapman at the top of the third and addressed a long-time sore spot behind Steven Jackson six picks later. Polk lacks off-the-charts measurables, but is pro-ready from a blitz-pickup standpoint and runs with terrific vision in the BenJarvus Green-Ellis mold. He never wastes steps. Davis is a special teams prospect. Rainey is a timid if explosive and versatile receiver/back/returner with playmaking ability -- and a great value in round six. Wilson could emerge as Sam Bradford's long-term backup quarterback. Four players in this draft are day-one starters, and three more have the ability to make major contributions in season one. That may have plenty to do with the state of the Rams' roster, but it's also a testament to the talent acquired. This draft was awarded the lone A+ grade of #MockTwo. |
Grade: A+ |
| Pick | Overall | Choice | Notes | |
| 1.08 | 8 | Riley Reiff, OT from Iowa | Fisher still believes in the old school, win in the trenches and pound the rock game. Reiff is a solid LT prospect from an elite OL school. Some people aren't as high on him, but he'll either be a good LT or elite LG. | |
| 2.01 | 33 | Stephen Hill, WR from Georgia Tech | This guy is Calvin Johnson light. Size and speed of an ideal prospect. Great hands and ball skills to attack at the top point. Just needs some refining and experience running a complete route tree. The type of guy the Rams desperately need outside. Big player who can take the top off of a D. | |
| 2.02 | 34 | Reuben Randle, WR from L.S.U. | And the Rams have outside WR's! Another big and fast player who didn't get to shine in college due to poor QB play. Should be a much better pro. Runs a pretty good route tree, is physical at the line and has deceptive speed. Big WR and should look great across from Stephen Hill! | |
| 3.02 | 66 | Josh Chapman, DT from Alabama | When your run defense is as bad as ours, you need to add a player like Josh Chapman. In our 4-3 system, he'll be able to shade over the centre and take on double teams in the middle. This should allow the rest of our DL to get to the quarterback. It's not a glamourous job, but if you look at the tape, you'll fall in love with him. Constantly getting off the snap quickly and creating a push at the line. Thrilled to add him to our team, even if he might be viewed as a 2 down DT. | |
| 3.08 | 72 | Chris Polk, RB from Washington | Dear S-Jax, meet your new battering ram teammate. Polk's ferocious running style will not be a great compliment to what we already have, but the combo of Polk and S-Jax will punish defenders all game. Polk is also doing well, addressing speed and weight concerns. Pound that rock Fisher! | |
| 4.10 | 105 | Demario Davis, OLB from Arkansas St. | A size and speed combination with good cover skills, should come in and start at LOLB right away. OLB a position that hasn't been solidified for the Rams in about 10 years and desperately needs to be. Davis' pursuit to the ball and abilities will fit in well with the Rams. For the record, I was looking for Kendricks here, but Davis is a decent substitute. | |
| 6.08 | 167 | Chris Rainey, RB from Florida | Chris Rainey will be a "moveable piece" for our O, similar to Dexter McCluster. He'll play some RB, some slot WR, return kicks and punts and be a ST contributor. Dangerous in the open field, we'll find a way to get him 5-10 touches a game. His speed will look even more dangerous on the Edward Jones Dome carpet. Obviously the goal in this draft was to fill our team with playmakers, which I believe I've achieved. | |
| 7.02 | 192 | Russell Wilson, QB from Wisconsin | We currently don't have a back-up QB and our interest in Jason Campbell and Shaun Hill indicates that we're putting a priority on this slot. I like a lot of what Russell Wilson offers as a back-up and spot starter. Reminds be of a Jeff Garcia type. Has the mobility and throw on the run abilities that are required to run a Schottenheimer offense. His height will limit his success at the next level, but he's a smart, accurate passer who can use his legs to make throws, much like Sam Bradford. |
