| Selecting easily the best all-around defensive end in this draft's class may get the headlines, but the Jags did themselves a real service by securing Miller at No. 50 overall, after a trade down. By giving up 12 spots in round two, the Jaguars landed arguably this year's second best running back and an additional fifth-round pick, with which they got Nix. Maurice Jones-Drew isn't going to hold up much longer on his recent workloads. At the very least, Miller is a huge upgrade on Deji Karim.
Jones and Peterson are projects. Jones and Nix are highly regarded in the scouting community as nasty interior linemen who maximize their talent. Fletcher may eventually move to strong safety in Jacksonville. Fuller worked over Patrick Peterson one-on-one in last year's Cotton Bowl, although he took a big step back as a senior. Fuller was still worth a flier toward the end of the sixth round. This draft is hard not to like. The Jags won't be a winning team until they get more toughness at quarterback, but otherwise pieces are now in place for a run at the playoffs. The draft gets a B+. |
Grade: B+ |
| Pick | Overall | Choice | Notes | |
| 1.07 | 7 | Quinton Coples, DE from North Carolina | ||
| 2.18 | 50 | Lamar Miller, RB from Miami (FL) | Playmaker who will take some of the load off MJD. | |
| 3.07 | 71 | Chandler Jones, DE from Syracuse | Jones is right at the top of my board and it fits an obvious position of need for the Jaguars. Would love to see him paired with Coples. | |
| 4.06 | 101 | Ben Jones, C from Georgia | Love the value here for Jones and with C Brad Meester aging, he'll be poised to take over soon. | |
| 5.07 | 134 | Jarius Wright, WR from Arkansas | There is so much potential WR value in this class and grabbing Wright is a steal in the 5th. | |
| 5.08 | 135 | Deangelo Peterson, TE from L.S.U. | Peterson has some untapped potential at the TE position. He came into college as a WR and he'll be a perfect down-the-field complement to Marcedes Lewis in 2-TE packages. | |
| 5.15 | 142 | Lucas Nix, OG from Pittsburgh | Nix is a guy who can compete for playing time right away. The Jags need talent all along the offensive line, especially at guard where Will Rackley really struggled as a rookie. | |
| 6.06 | 165 | Donnie Fletcher, CB from Boston College | No combine invite, but a CB with size and potential. The Jags have some veteran depth at the position, so he should have time to develop. | |
| 6.10 | 169 | Jeff Fuller, WR from Texas A&M | Fuller is worth a late round flier at this point. His size and speed are intriguing, and if he can run better routes and catch the ball consistently, he could give Gabbert some help. |
