San Francisco 49ers |
On the clock: Indianapolis Colts, Pick: 7.48 |
| Pick | Overall | Choice | Notes | |
| 2.02 | 34 | Jesse Williams, DT from Alabama | We traded 1.31 to grab a '14 first from Oakland and two 6ths this year. Excited to finally make a pick, and more so that Williams was even still there. With the versatility he brings to the line, even if we were to use our '14 firsts to trade up for a certain South Carolina defensive end, we can still move the Aussie around and plug him into our defensive line rotation for the next several years. | |
| 2.31 | 61 | Phillip Thomas, S from Fresno State | Executed by admin. | |
| 3.02 | 64 | Quinton Patton, WR from Louisiana Tech | Thanks to Brandon for selecting Phil Thomas for us. Love him as a Goldson replacement; may be some dropoff in play initially but long term we think his ballhawking skills, size and speed make for an excellent fit. As for Patton, he's a guy we'd have been OK with at 34 so this is great. Hopefully Crabtree re-signs, but if not he's a great building block for the future at WR for us. | |
| 3.31 | 93 | Robert Alford, CB from Southeastern Louisiana | Our secondary started to wear thin late into the season, and we're more than happy to add Phillip Thomas and now Robert Alford to the mix. Alford would come in and compete with Rogers, Brown, Culliver, and Asomugha right away, and provide long term stability at the position in the event Brown leaves in a year. | |
| 4.31 | 128 | Dion Sims, TE from Michigan State | We love that Dion Sims was still there at the end of round 4. He is arguably the best blocking TE in this draft class and can also catch some passes as well. He will come into camp and battle Garrett Celek for #2 TE duties behind Vernon Davis. | |
| 4.34 | 131 | Sean Porter, OLB from Texas A&M | Porter is a stud pass rusher coming off the edge which is exactly what we need behind Ahmad Brooks and Aldon Smith. He is a sure tackler and has the speed to cover short and intermediate routes in pass coverage. We had a mid-third round grade on him on our board and are thrilled with this pickup in the late 4th. | |
| 5.07 | 140 | Khaled Holmes, C from Southern California | Jonathan Goodwin is entering his last contract year, and we love Holmes' athleticism and think he would make for a great fit in our offense. He'll sit and learn for a season and then compete with Daniel Kilgore and Joe Looney for the starting spot in '14. | |
| 6.04 | 172 | Kwame Geathers, DT from Georgia | We're thrilled to be able to land Geathers here in the 6th. Great value, especially after losing Sopoaga and Jean-Freancois. He'll learn behind Glenn Dorsey, and with Jesse Williams, be set up to anchor our defensive line for many years going forward. | |
| 7.13 | 219 | Jasper Collins, WR from Mount Union | Small school kid with big upside. Had a great week at the East-West game and showed that he can return punts as well. Solid route runner, will serve as a slot guy and punt return depth. Solid value here. | |
| 7.31 | 237 | Joseph Fauria, TE from UCLA | Had a solid season this past year. Will compete for a roster spot or be a practice squad player. | |
| 7.40 | 246 | Tanner Hawkinson, OT from Kansas | The 49ers were willing to take a risk on a project with potential. Hawkinson is more of an athlete than a tackle at this point, but with the roster we have right now, he will be able to sit back and learn. We like the value on the pick here. | |
| 7.46 | 252 | Stansly Maponga, DE from TCU | You can never have too many pass rushers. Thats the motto the 49ers are going by. Maponga is the best available player on our board, and we are shocked he slipped all the way down here. Maponga is another raw project, but the 49ers have no need to play Maponga this year. He will learn from some of the best in the league here in San Fran. He can play both DE and OLB, so we like the added versatility. |
